Ohio Machine Position Battles: Attack

Leading up to the Ohio Machine’s 2013 training camp, the Machine will be breaking down the individual positions of the team starting with the attack. Attackmen typically are the team’s primary scorers with their main responsibilities being to settle the offense while at the same time enduring the stick checks and hits from the opposing team’s defenders. These attackmen have to figure out how to get past each defender they face while also having to be quick to find a hole, teammate or the net in order to score during the possession.

In its inaugural season, the Machine had some of the best attackmen in Major League Lacrosse who all had career-high seasons.  Jim Connolly, Chazz Woodson and Steele Stanwick led Machine attackmen in goals, 27, 24 and 11 respectively, and complied for 37% of the total goals.

In 2012 with the Machine, Jim Connolly had the best season of his MLL careerandranked second on the team with 32 points (27 G, 5 A) and recorded five hat-tricks, as well as scored in 12 of the 13 games played and received his first All-Star appearance as a Young Gun.

Steele Stanwick entered into the MLL scene mid-way through the 2012 season with the Machine and ended his rookie year with a total of 28 points off of 11 goals and 17 assists. Stanwick led all MLL rookies in assists and scored in seven of his nine games played.

The veteran attackman Chazz Woodson had a career-best season during the Machine’s inaugural year where he led the team in points (38) with a career best of 24 goals and points, as well as tied his career best in assists (14) and played in his second All-Star game.

Now with a season under its belt with the help of Connolly, Woodson and Stanwick, the Machine’s attack line going into the 2013 training camp is going to be stronger than ever with several players vying for playing time at attack. Returning Machine players Billy Eisenreich, Mario Ventiquattro and Joe Cummings, as well as the fresh new faces of Art Kell and Scott Perri from the 2013 Supplemental Draft, will be right on the cleats of the Machine’s leading attackmen showing the Machine coaching staff why they should be a front runner for the top attack positions.

While playing primarily as a midfielder for the Machine, Joe Cummings became a top scorer for the Machine in his rookie season. Cummings played in only four games for the Machine but scored nine goals and tallied two assists landing him seventh on the team in points. Cummings played attack his senior season at Maryland and could push for playing time at that same position for the Machine.

Billy Eisenreich, a 2012 Machine Collegiate Draftee, played in three games for the Machine in its inaugural season. In his final game of the season for the Machine, he played attack scoring his first career MLL goal and tallying one assist against the Rochester Rattlers.

In his first MLL season, Art Kell joins the Machine after finishing an incredible 2012 senior year with University of Massachusetts. With the Minutemen, Kell was second on the team for points (53) and assists (20), as well as tied second in goals (33). Known for his bruising style of play, Kell will look to add some physicality to the Machine’s attack unit.

Scott Perri enters into his third MLL season with the Machine. He has yet to crack the top 25-man roster for a team but looks to make a name for himself with the Machine. Perri comes to the Machine after an incredible college tenure with Drexel University, where he finished his senior season as the team’s leading scorer with 66 points on 39 goals and 27 assists.

Drafted by the Machine in 2012,Mario Ventiquattro did not see playing time with the Machine but brings with him an outstanding college career from The Ohio State University. Ventiquattro closed out his college tenure playing in 55 games for the Buckeyes and scoring 73 goals and recording 25 assists for a total of 98 points.

With the 2013 training camp in April quickly approaching, players and coaching staff have a lot of preparing to do to get ready for all of these talented players vying for the coveted top three attack positions.
