Game Preview

The Ohio Machine is on the road for its first away game this season against the defending MLL Champions Chesapeake Bayhawks. This is the first time the two teams will be meeting in 2013. The Ohio Machine lost both games against the Bayhawks, including its 2012 season opener last year.

Looking Back

Last week, the Machine suffered its first loss of the season against 2012 Championship runners up Denver in the Machine’s home opener, 13-8. The Machine welcomed several new players to the lineup, including Jeff Ledwick, who scored his first two MLL goals. The Machine also had returning players Eric O’Brien, Steele Stanwick, Chazz Woodson and Jim Connolly who scored their first season goals. The Machine offense struggled to keep up their momentum on Denver’s half of the field and found it difficult to get to the net. The Denver offense gave the Machine defense and goalie Stefan Schroder even harder challenges. With one tough game under its belt, the Machine is ready to take on the Bayhawks this week.

Player Notes

#1 Chazz Woodson – Woodson is only two goals away from hitting the mark of 90 career goals and one assist away from having 40 total assists in only 66 games. He also has 127 total points in his seven MLL seasons.

#11 Jeff Ledwick – Ledwick played in his first-ever MLL game this past weekend against the Outlaws. Ledwick made his debut scoring two goals to share the title of the team's leading scorer with teammate Eric O’Brien.

#19 Joe Cummings – Cummings is playing his first 2013 season game with the Machine against Chesapeake. Cummings ended the 2012 season playing in only four games but scoring nine goals and tallying two assists. Three of those nine goals came when Cummings scored his first career hat-trick in the July 21 game against Chesapeake and was the game’s leading scorer. The Machine acquired Cummings from Chesapeake in a trade deadline deal last season.

#21 Jim Connolly – Connolly was the leading goal scorer in the first match up with the Bayhawks. He scored his first career hat-trick and tallied an assist during the game. Connolly also scored one goal at the July 21 game against Chesapeake.

#55 Chad Wiedmaier– Wiedmaier will appear in his first game with the Machine against Chesapeake on Saturday. Wiedmaier was traded to the Machine from the Nationals in March. While with Hamilton, he collected 18 groundballs and one assist.

Team Notes

Maryland Alma Maters – Machine players Joe Cummings, Ray Megill and Max Schmidt are returning to their alma mater state to play against Chesapeake in Annapolis, Maryland. Megill played at Maryland from 2004-2007 and Cummings and Schmidt played side-by-side from 2009-2011. Cummings graduated in 2012 as Maryland’s Player of the Year.

Chesapeake’s Tough Defeat –Chesapeake played the Machine during the 2012 season for the Machine’s inaugural season opener. The Machine took its hardest loss against the Bayhawks in the first game by allowing 23 goals and a deficit of 12 goals.

Powerplay Goals – In the inaugural opener against Chesapeake, Machine players Brett Garber and Jim Connolly were able to score three goals during powerplays, including a two-point goal from Garber. The Machine was 3-4 in powerplay goals in the first match up.

Coaches Thoughts

Reflection on Denver: “We weren’t satisfied with the loss; it was 5-4 at half and we thought we were in pretty good shape for the second half. We didn’t have any face-offs the second half and we didn’t even have the ball as much as we wanted to, but when we did, we had some unforced errors that didn’t help. We had opportunities to finish the situations around the goal but Schwartzman had the saves. If you put all those together, Denver’s was going to pull away from us.”

Ledwick’s First Game: “He’s a really good team player, polished and a great person. His skills are very solid. With your first pro game, you’re a little nervous and you have to shake that early. He doesn’t appear to be nervous and was having fun out there and smiling the whole time. He realized everything he should do differently and make adjustments to the offense.”

Strengths against Chesapeake: “Those guys really made sacrifices last year; they traded some of their players and changed their lineup from game to game and won a championship. They have so many weapons out there on offense. We have to get possession of the ball and generate those opportunities to score. Our defense is pretty solid and they played well together against a strong Denver offense. You can’t score unless you have the ball and without scoring you can’t win.”

Scouting Chesapeake

The 2012 MLL Champions Chesapeake Bayhawks defeated New York last week in a 9-3 victory. The Bayhawks also defeated Rochester during MLL opening weekend 17-14. Chesapeake has power shooters this year, including Ben Rubeor who scored seven goals against New York, and Kyle Dixon, who scored three two-point goals against Rochester, which ties the league record. The Bayhawks have a large majority of players with five or more years of MLL experience and balance those experienced players with some newer legs. Chesapeake has kept their adrenaline rush from last year’s championship game to win both MLL season games so far. According to Coach Dave Cottle, the team is planning on keeping the rush throughout the season.
