Game Preview

The Ohio Machine is back on the road for its second away game and fifth game of the season against the Rochester Rattlers. This is the first time the teams will be playing each other in 2013. The Ohio Machine went 1-1 against the Rattlers last season, including the inaugural home opener where the Machine defeated the Rattlers 16-10.

Looking Back

Last week, the Machine lost 16-9 to the Hamilton Nationals who are currently MLL’s number one. The Machine welcomed rookies Logan Schuss (Ohio State), Dominique Alexander (Ohio State) and Marcus Holman (North Carolina) to the field in their debut. Together, the three added to the board for the Machine, including one goal and two assists. The Machine were tied with the Nationals at halftime 8-8 but couldn’t keep its momentum going into the second half after they scored only one goal while the Nationals scored nine goals in a row.

Player Notes

#2 (A) Marcus Holman: In his MLL debut, Holman was nothing less than extraordinary contributing to the Machine stats with two ground balls, two assists and his first MLL two-point goal. Holman joins the Machine after ending his senior season at UNC as the solo team captain and all-time leading scorer. He ended the regular season with 74 points and was named ACC Offensive Player of the Year; first team All-ACC and the ACC tournament Most Outstanding Player. Among the numerous awards, Holman is a 2013 Tewaaraton Award Top 5 Finalist and 2013 First Team All-American.

#6 (A) Steele Stanwick: Stanwick accounted for three of the seven assists last time the Machine took on the Rattlers in Rochester. Last week against the Nationals, Steele had three goals and two assists accounting for five points - a career high for Stanwick and currently ranking him first on the team with points (10).

#19 (M) Joe Cummings: In last week’s game against the Hamilton Nationals, Cummings had an outstanding three goals in just the second quarter alone. Cummings currently has five goals this season, ranking him first on the team with goals and second for points (7).

#21 (A) Jim Connolly: Connolly had one of his best games against the Rattlers last season. In their first meeting and the Machine’s first win, Connolly scored three goals and tallied one assist. This season Connolly has played in three games with the Machine scoring three goals in two of those games.

#32 (FO/M) Chase Carraro: Denver’s standout senior now joins the Machine for his MLL debut against the Rattlers. Chase earned USILA Second Team All-American honors. He finished his college career with 33 goals and 11 assists, while winning 553 of 973 face-offs and 253 groundballs. Carraro’s college tenure ended after Denver lost to Syracuse in the NCAA Men’s Lacrosse Semifinals 9-8. Carraro contributed in the game with one goal and won 12-of-21 face-offs. He finished the season with a team high of 112 groundballs and finished eighth in the nation in face-off win percentage.

Team Notes

Rookie Surplus: The Machine will have six rookies playing together against the Rattlers on Sunday. Three Machine rookies will be playing in their first MLL game against Rochester Saturday: Chase Carraro (FO – Denver), Jake Bernhardt (M – Maryland) and Kevin Mack (M – Ohio State). Rookies  Logan Schuss (A – Ohio State), Dominique Alexander (M – Ohio State) and Marcus Holman (A – UNC) return to the Machine line up from last week’s game against the Hamilton Nationals.

Rattlers to the Machine: Machine players Diogo Godoi and Joe Cummings will be returning to Rochester to play against their previous team. Godoi played for the Rattlers in 13 games where he tallied 23 groundballs before being drafted by the Machine in the 2013 MLL Supplemental Draft. Cummings was drafted by Rochester 17th Overall in 2012 before being traded to the Bayhawks and then to the Machine. The Machine has a total of five former Rattlers players on the roster – Greg Bice, Joe Cummings, Brett Garber, Diogo Godoi and Stefan Schroder.

Two-Point Goals Not Welcomed: The Ohio Machine is tied with Denver and Charlotte for first in MLL for two-point goals allowed with only one two-point goal allowed so far this season. Rochester has allowed eight this season in four games.

Young Guns Overtaking: Six players in the Machine line up are either first or second round picks in the 2012 or 2013 MLL Collegiate Draft: Steele Stanwick (2nd Overall – 2012), Chad Wiedmaier (7th Overall – 2012), Jake Bernhardt (12th Overall – 2012), Logan Schuss (11th Overall – 2013), Marcus Holman (12th Overall – 2013), Chase Carraro (13th Overall – 2013). The picks used by the Machine to draft Schuss, Holman and Carraro in the 2013 MLL Collegiate Draft all came from the Rattlers in 2012 trades.

Coaches Thoughts

Addition of Jake Bernhardt: “Jake is a great athlete who can get up and down the field quickly and will be able to make a difference in our line up. He is a guy with a football player mentality in a lacrosse uniform, who is looking for a new start and to prove himself, which is a great combination for us. Our guys are excited to get him in the lineup and to see the energy he brings to the midfield this weekend.”

Play Improvements: “We have to do a better job at getting the ball so we have the chances at the goal instead of trying to dig ourselves out of the holes we seem to be putting ourselves in. We also need to slow it down a bit as well. Unless we have a really good break situation, we need to get it down and around so we can get our middies off and get a rhythm to our offense.”

More Rookie Additions: “These guys can’t wait to get back out on the field and play in the MLL. But I’ve told them you don’t have to be the best player out there; you just do what you do best and have fun out there.”

Marcus Holman’s First Game: “Marcus is tough to cover one-on-one. He has a quick change of direction and makes the defense second guess where he will go next. But one thing that surprised us that we didn’t know until he was out on the field was that he has a wicked shot from up top, which he scored off of this past game. We are looking forward to seeing what else he has in store for us this season.”

Scouting Rochester

Currently the Rattlers are 1-3 in MLL. Key players to watch for with the Rattlers are Ned Crotty, Matt Streibel, Rob Rotanz and Jordan MacIntosh. In their only win of the season over Charlotte, MacIntosh had four of the 13 goals for the Rattlers, while Matt Streibel had three goals and Ned Crotty accounted for two. Last week the Rattlers were defeated by the Denver Outlaws 7-20. Denver shut down Rochester’s offense with MacIntosh and Rotanz scoring two goals each during the game. In 2012, the Machine went one and one against the Rattlers winning its inaugural season home opener 16-10 but later losing to the Rattlers the second time around 14-13. Streibel scored his 10th career two-point goal against the Machine last year.  Currently, Rochester has yet to win a home game. The Rattlers are 0-2 at home, losing to Chesapeake and Charlotte earlier in the season.

Up Next

The Machine ends its two-game road trip against the Charlotte Hounds in Charlotte on Saturday, June 8, before heading back home to Columbus on Saturday, June 15, to take on the Rattlers during “Ohio Lacrosse Night.”
