Machine Plays Its Hardest, Comes Out on Bottom

The Machine played its hardest against the Boston Cannons tonight with a new coaching staff and a new game plan, but came out on bottom losing 13-10.

The Machine took the field in the first quarter with a burst of energy and strong defense to offense transitions. Marcus Holman put the Machine on the board first for an early lead and an extra offensive boost. Logan Schuss fired two shots on Jordan Burke to bring the Machine’s lead up, but a goal from Paul Rabil put the score at 3-1 at the end of the first quarter.

Boston opened the second quarter with a 4-0 scoring streak with goals from Cameron Flint, Will Manny and Kevin Buchanan. Chase Carraro and Steele Stanwick teamed up on offense and broke Boston’s streak.

Flint put up another goal for the Cannons for a second quarter hat-trick and a 6-4 Boston lead. Kiel Matisz put one in the back of net within the last few minutes of the half, but Boston kept its second quarter lead and went into halftime ahead 6-5.

“We had a ton of energy coming into tonight’s game with the new coaching staff and came with structure and a game plan,” said Steele Stanwick. “We just keep building off of our previous games and will continue to do so in our future play.”

The Cannons were ready to dominate coming out of halftime and had another large 5-0 scoring streak. The Machine broke Boston’s streak again with a goal from Logan Schuss for a game hat-trick and tightened Boston’s lead 11-6. The score remained 11-6 going into the final quarter.

Ray Megill fired a 2-point goal for the Fireball Whiskey Shot of the Game and his first goal of the season to bring the score to 11-8 at the start of the fourth quarter. Schuss felt the momentum from Megill’s shot and buried two back-to-back goals to shorten Boston’s lead 12-10. The Machine was hungry to catch up and fought even harder during the final minutes of the game.

“Steele can handle the ball and hand it off to me, which is why we have a strong chemistry up on offense,” said Logan Schuss. “There is good ball movement up on top and guys find openings in the system.”

The Machine offense couldn’t find any final opportunities to score and its defense tried to hold tight until the very end of the game. Boston’s Ryan Doyle scored the final goal of the game, and the Cannons walked away victorious, 13-10.

“It’s a whole new learning curve for me and a learning experience for the guys,” said new Head Coach Bear Davis. “All the things I wanted to prepare for our guys for tonight’s game is what we will continue to work on for next game. I think they handled adversity very well for being such a young team.”

The Machine is back at Selby Stadium next week on July 6 at 7:30 p.m. for “$2 Beer Night” against the 2012 MLL Champions, the Chesapeake Bayhawks. Purchase your tickets today!
