Game Preview

After a two-game homestand and the All-Star break, the Machine is back on the road to face the Hamilton Nationals at Ron Joyce Stadium. This game is the second time the teams will meet in the 2013 season. Earlier in the season, the Machine lost to Hamilton at home, 16-9.

Looking Back

In the Machine’s last game, the team played one of its best and closest games of the season, losing 13-12 to the 2012 MLL Champions, the Chesapeake Bayhawks. The game was a thriller from beginning to end as both teams battled to break away with the lead. The Machine took control of the game right out of the gates and led 2-0 halfway through the first quarter. Chesapeake quickly caught up and brought the game to a tie 4-4 score at the end of the first quarter. The Bayhawks tried to use the start of the second quarter as an opportunity to run away with the score, but had every point answered with a Machine goal. The teams went into halftime tied 8-8. Coming out of the half, the Machine put the Bayhawks on halt and stopped them from scoring any goals until the final minutes of the third quarter. Despite the Machine’s strong defense, the game was still tied at 10-10 entering into the final 15 minutes. Tensions were high for both teams to take the lead, but Chesapeake beat the Machine to the net. The Bayhawks soon had the largest lead of the game, 13-10, with minutes to play. The Machine pushed its way back up on offense and scored two more goals, but ran out of time to put one more point on the board. The Bayhawks walked away victorious, 13-12.

Team Notes

Team Improvements –During the last two games, the Machine has been able to cut down on opposing team’s scoring streaks, holding them to a maximum of five goals a quarter. Earlier in the season, the Machine would get shut out during quarters and allow up to seven goals per 15 minutes.

Double Digit Games –The Machine has scored three double-digit games this season, including in its first season win against Rochester and during the last two consecutive home games. The Machine’s leading scorers during the double-digit games were Joe Cummings and Logan Schuss, who both registered career-highs of five goals in at least one of those games.

Machine All Stars – The Machine was represented by Kyle Hartzell and Steele Stanwick during the 2013 MLL All-Star Game presented by Moe’s Southwest Grill. Hartzell tallied two goals, including a two-point goal, along with an assist for a total of four points. Stanwick tallied one goal and four assists for a total of five points, tying for first with most points along with Kevin Crowley and Kevin Buchanan.

Rookies’ First Debuts – Some of the Machine rookies made their MLL debuts against the Hamilton Nationals earlier this season including Logan Schuss, Marcus Holman and Dominique Alexander. Holman scored his first MLL goal during that same game while Schuss and Alexander tallied their first groundballs.

Coach’s Thoughts

Defining Character - "Every time we step out onto the field, we are defining the character of this team. We're starting to put points up and starting to manage the clock better. We're going to get a few new faces into the line-up this weekend to give them a shot because the coaches and I need to know who we need to build around in the off season."

Rookies and Veterans – “The rookies aren’t being treated any differently from the veterans. We’re trying to identify what style of play we want regardless if they are a rookie or veteran, and the guys like that because they want to help create the identity for the Machine as well.”

Points on Improvement – “We’re focused on managing the clock, which was somewhat of an issue, especially when you have 19 guys to watch. They all have to complement each other and find that balance. It’s amazing how your goal production will go up when that happens. A lot of people think you need to push, push, push but we’ve just have to manage the situation better to get the results we want.”

Last Match-Up

The Machine last played Hamilton earlier in the season at home and lost 16-9 after a loss of momentum in the second half. Hamilton took possession first and scored the first three goals of the game for an early lead. The Machine stopped the streak and put a goal on the scoreboard to end the first quarter trailing 3-1. The Machine stayed closer on Hamilton’s tail in the second quarter and answered all of the Nationals’ goals with goals of its own. As halftime approached, the Machine was only down by one goal. Marcus Holman started off the third quarter strong for the Machine as he fired his first MLL 2-point goal to bring the score to a tie game. However, the Nationals came out of halftime ready to take the win and went on an 8-0 scoring streak between the third and fourth quarters. With one last goal from Kyle Hartzell, the Machine was too far behind to catch up and lost 16-9.

Scouting Hamilton

Before the All-Star break, Hamilton played the Rochester Rattlers and held them to a team record of six goals the entire game and defeated them 10-6. The Nationals defense held Rochester to only two goals in the first quarter, while the offense pushed ahead and scored three goals for the first quarter lead. Hamilton’s defense remained tough in the second quarter and stopped Rochester on almost every shot, allowing just one goal to go through. The Rochester defense tightened up as well and was able to hold Hamilton to two goals for a score of 5-4 walking into halftime. The Nationals used the third quarter to break away from the Rattlers and put up four goals against Rochester’s two. Entering the final quarter, Hamilton maintained its 9-5 lead. Both teams were only able to shoot one more goal in the last quarter, keeping Hamilton’s lead and ending the game 10-6.
