Machine Wins First Road Game, Dents Boston's Playoff Chances

The Ohio Machine won its first road game 16-12 against the Boston Cannons and held off a late comeback to threaten Boston’s playoff chances.

The Machine opened up the game with an early 3-0 lead with goals from Kiel Matisz, Eric O’Brien and Jim Connolly. The Machine offense was dominating the Cannons’ half of the field and taking advantage of open opportunities to pass and complete shots on goal.

The Cannons answered with two goals to put themselves on the board and hoped to stop the momentum of the ignited Machine offense. Machine goalie Scott Rodgers was stopping Boston’s shots left and right to keep the Machine’s lead.

The Machine gained its momentum back and pushed the intensity on offense to fire three more goals in the first quarter. With a 7-2 lead to end the first quarter, the Machine had played one of its best opening quarters all season.

The second quarter started slowly with the first goal coming from Kiel Matisz for his first half hat-trick. Logan Schuss answered with back-to-back goals to push the Machine’s lead even further, 10-2. With minutes to play in the half, the Cannons found the net and put up two goals to trail 10-4 going into halftime.

Both teams remained scoreless five minutes into the third quarter until Boston’s Matt Poskay scored on a man-up opportunity. The Machine took the majority of the quarter to find some motion on offense and eventually found Jake Bernhardt to bring the Machine’s lead back up by five.

Logan Schuss immediately followed up Bernhardt’s goal with a hat-trick and the Machine was pulling away with the lead again, 12-6. Kevin Buchanan found an opportunity to score a 2-point goal and the Cannons were shortening the lead. Mike Stone scored one more for Boston before the end of the quarter, and the Machine was only ahead by three points for the final quarter.

After a tough third quarter, the Machine offense needed to get its energy back up to breakaway with the lead again. Jake Bernhardt wasted no time in the fourth quarter and scored for a 13-9 Machine lead. Logan Schuss followed with his fourth goal of the game   for the Fireball Whisky Shot of the Game and Bernhardt scored for a hat-trick.

With eight minutes left in the game, Boston fought to stop the Machine’s scoring drive and cut the Machine’s lead to only three points. Stephen Berger and Will Manny both scored for hat-tricks, and the Cannons were trailing 15-12 with minutes to play.

The Machine defense needed to stop a hungry Boston offense and succeeded in holding them back with amazing saves from Brine’s Player of the Game, Scott Rodgers. Chase Carraro scored one more low shot for the Machine and the Machine walked away with the first victory on the road winning 16-12.

The Machine plays its final game of the season next Saturday, Aug. 10 at 7 p.m. at James M. Shuart Stadium against the New York Lizards. Fans can watch the game live on ESPN3.com.
