Get to Know the Machine: Brian Farrell

The Ohio Machine continues to add fresh faces to its talented roster including University of Maryland defenseman and MLL veteran Brian Farrell, who was traded from the Boston Cannons this past September. Farrell played for the Boston Cannons in a total of 31 games over the past three seasons after being drafted in the 2011 MLL Collegiate Draft by Boston. While with the Cannons, Farrell scored 14 goals and recorded seven assists for a total of 23 points, as well as gathered 74 groundballs. Farrell was part of the Cannons’ 2011 MLL Championship team and in that same year was named Boston’s Rookie of the Year, as well as named a 2012 MLL All-Star.

Prior to joining the Cannons, Farrell played for Maryland from 2007 to 2011 where he captained the Terps in 2010 and 2011 and was a three-time USILA All-American selection, as well as a two-time All-Atlantic Coast Conference Academic and two-time Tewaaraton Trophy nominee. Farrell most recently was named to the 52-man U.S. Men’s National Team training roster set to compete at the 2014 Federation of International Lacrosse (FIL) World Championships.

Get to Know Brian Farrell:

1. What made you choose lacrosse over all the other sports out there?

It is the most fun. Love the back and forth action and the speed at which the game is played.

2.  When you were little, did you expect to play at the MLL level?

No, I definitely did not.

3. What is some advice you would give to those youth players hoping to make it to MLL status one day?

Keep working hard. Take your free time to work on your stick work. You have to put in extra time if you want to succeed to the highest level.

4. Who has been your favorite person to work with up to this point in your lacrosse career?

All of my coaches. Between Bob Shriver, Dave Cottle, John Tillman and Billy Daye I have been blessed to be around such lacrosse knowledge.

5. Who is your lacrosse role model?

My father. He is one of the greats to play the game and someone I strive to be like in all aspects of life.

6. What is one thing that you try to improve on with your playing style?

My footwork – defensemen can always use extra work.

7. What are you looking forward to the most in the 2014 season?

I’m looking forward to a fresh start and new beginning, as well as playing with old teammates and friends.

8. How do you usually spend your offseason?

I work for the Salisbury School as an assistant admissions director. I also coach football and lacrosse for the school. In the summer, I am a national director for Trilogy Lacrosse.

9. Do you have any game day superstitions? If yes, what are they?

Not really…the only thing I do before every game is re-tape my stick, if that even counts.

10. What is your typical pregame meal?

Some sort of protein and carb – chicken and pasta usually.

11. How do you prepare for an upcoming match?

I like to watch film on top of working out during the week and try to keep a stick in my hand.

12. How do you categorize a season as successful?

Winning a Championship – anything else is a failure.

13. What is the best advice you’ve ever received?

Do your job and everything else will take care of itself!
