Machine Falls to Cannons on Record-Setting Night

The Ohio Machine battled to the end, but ultimately lost, 17-16, to the Boston Cannons Friday at Selby Stadium.

The Machine tied a club record with a score of 16, and attackman Logan Schuss set a Machine single-game record with eight points, but it wasn’t quite enough to escape with the win.

Ohio moved to 2-4 on the season with all four of its losses coming by two goals or less.

Ohio started off with an early lead before falling behind going into halftime.

Machine midfielder Kyle Harrison got the scoring started off of an assist from attackman Steele Stanwick, then defenseman Greg Bice added a two-point goal less than two minutes later for a 3-0 lead. Boston equaled after three consecutive goals, before the two teams traded one more goal each to end the quarter.

Bice’s tally was his first goal of the season, and the first goal by a Machine defenseman in 2014. It also marked his first two-point goal in Machine uniform, his first long-bomb overall since 2009 and the second of his career.

With just six seconds remaining in the first half attackman Marcus Holman scored to cut the Cannons’ lead to one, but Boston midfielder Brent Adams scored at the buzzer to make it a 11-9 advantage. The second quarter ended with a total of 12 goals between the two teams.

The second half started off with a bang as Ohio attackman Logan Schuss tallied his second goal of the game just 35 seconds in. After a Boston goal, Holman moved the Machine back within one with less than seven minutes left in the quarter.

Boston’s former Buckeye, Kevin Buchanan, scored a goal that was initially waved off, but Schuss again equaled for the Machine as the two teams continued to battle back and forth. The third quarter ended with the score tied at 13.

The Machine took its first lead since the first quarter when attackman Steele Stanwick tallied just eight seconds into the fourth. Ohio was able to kill a Boston powerplay moments later, but the Cannons scored just after play returned to even.

Schuss put his fourth goal in the net to take a 16-15 lead, but Boston finished the game on a two-goal run to take the win.

Schuss and Harrison each finished with four goals, while midfielder Tom Schreiber and Holman each added two goals. Schuss had four assists and Stanwick added three.

The Machine has scored two-point goals in consecutive games after Holman scored one against Chesapeake May 31.

Goalie Brian Phipps replaced starter Scott Rodgers at halftime, and made seven saves on 13 shots on goal before taking the loss. Rodgers finished with seven saves of his own and faced 18 shots on goal. Eric O’Brien finished five for 14 on face-offs while Bobby Dattilo went 12-for-21 in his Machine debut.

Will Manny and Berger each scored four goals for Boston and Paul Rabil, Buchanan and Ryan Boyle each added two. Jordan Burke was credited with the win for the Cannons.

The Machine will host the Rochester Rattlers Saturday, June 14, at Selby Stadium. Face off is set for 5:30 p.m. and the game will be broadcast on the MLL Network.

After that, Ohio will travel to Boston June 21 for its second matchup with the Cannons in three weeks. That game is set for an 8 p.m. face off and will again be broadcast on the MLL Network.
