Machine Partners with OSU Medical Center

The Ohio Machine, which begins its inaugural season in Major League Lacrosse on May 5, 2012, announced today a multi-year partnership with The Ohio State University Medical Center (OSU Medical Center) as the Official Sports Medicine Provider and Athletic Training Partner of the Ohio Machine.

“We’re pleased to add such an esteemed institution as The Ohio State University Medical Center as our first Founding Partner,” said Machine President and General Manager John Algie. “Not only will our world-class players receive world-class treatment but we’re now also better able to bring valuable injury-prevention and diagnosis information directly to the lacrosse community.”

The three-year comprehensive partnership with OSU Medical Center, now a Founding Partner of the Machine, begins in 2012 and includes the OSU Medical Center Clinic Series, “Ohio State Sports Medicine Focus On” Corner and OSU Sports Medicine Night at the Machine’s inaugural season home opener on May 19, 2012.

According to Dr. Steven G. Gabbe, CEO of OSU Medical Center, the new partnership is important to the Medical Center's commitment to improve health and wellness among people in central Ohio.

“Ohio State’s rich history of providing high-quality care to athletes will benefit members of the Ohio Machine, and we also plan to develop programs for fans of lacrosse who want to have the latest information on sports conditioning, injury prevention and treatment options,” said Gabbe, who also played lacrosse at Princeton University.

“We’re thrilled to be part of something new in Columbus that will provide exciting – fun and family-oriented entertainment. We look forward to a great first season and our evolving partnership over the next several years.”

The OSU Medical Center Clinic Series kicks off with the Ohio Machine Coaches Clinic, hosted by Head Coach Ted Garber at a later date and open to coaches of all levels. OSU Medical Center and its “Ohio State Sports Medicine Focus On” Corner will also be prominently integrated with the Machine’s online content, including its website, newsletter and social media outlets.  “Ohio State Sports Medicine Focus On” will provide instructions and tips from OSU Medical Center’s distinguished doctors and health care professionals on various sports-related health topics from injury recognition and prevention to strength and conditioning exercises.

As the inaugural season home opener presenting sponsor on May 19, OSU Medical Center will be distributing a commemorative inaugural season home opener giveaway to each fan in attendance. The Machine will also be offering discounts to OSU faculty, staff and students for OSU Sports Medicine Night as part of the agreement.

Beginning with the 2012 inaugural season, OSU Medical Center will provide the Machine with a team physician, a strength and conditioning coach and a dedicated athletic training team throughout the season.

“As  medical providers for The Ohio State Univeristy, Capital University, Columbus State,  Columbus Clippers, BalletMet, and the Columbus City Schools,  our highly-qualified integrated team of medical professionals  look forward to keeping our players healthy and performing at their best,” said team physician Dr. Gubanich. "It is our goal to help ensure a successful inaugural season in 2012!"

Dr. Gubanich is board certified in Internal Medicine with a certificate of added qualification in Sports Medicine. A graduate of The Ohio State University College of Medicine, Dr. Gubanich completed his residency and fellowship training at the Cleveland Clinic where he worked in the Department of Orthopaedics from 2005-2011. Dr. Gubanich is a member of the American Medical Society of Sports Medicine.  He currently is seeing patients at the OSU CarePoint Lewis Center and the OSU Martha Morehouse Plaza locations.
